Water transport was of greater importance than communication by roads in ancient time. After 3000 B.C., sailing ships of considerable sizes were devolved, Phoenicians established links with various countries in the South – East Asia by sea routes. The Navy used to receive importance of all coastal countries but it received further impetus after their creation of professional British Navy by Henry 3rd and exploration of new lands by Spain and Portugal. R.Voltuiro gave illustrations of boats (1483) with crank driven paddle wheels. Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering got a big boost with the production of iron, steel and invention of the steam engine. Jonathan bull patented a steam boat in 1737 and in 1807 regular service with steam ships began. Brunel, Napier, David and Robert are regarded as founder father of marine engineering. Brunel was the pioneered the use screw propulsion. The East India Company stimulated the growth of shipbuilding industry further. The steam turbine was installed in ships in 1897 leading to more speed land economy. The diesel engine model power, computer control etc, have been progressively introduced in marine engineering as innovational steps.

Efficient transport by sea is an important mode of transportation, particularly for countries with an outlet to the sea. The merchant navy comprises of cargo vessels, passenger vessels, oil tankers, linear, car carriers and other types of specialized ships. These ships are operated by public and private sector shipping companies and manned by extensively trained and highly paid navigators, Marine Engineers and crew. A career in Merchant Navy means high incomes, greater independence and an exciting life style.
